ESTABLECIMIENTO DE RELACIONES DIPLOMATICAS CON HONDURAS

Con la presencia del Secretario General de la OEA, Dr. César Gaviria, el 20 de septiembre se llevó a cabo en la Sede de la OEA la ceremonia de establecimiento de relacione diplomáticas entre Croacia y Honduras. La Representante Permanente de Honduras ante la OEA, Laura Elena Nunez de Ponce, y el Observador Permanente de Croacia ante la OEA y Embajador ante los EEUU, Dr. Miomir Zuzul, firmaron una Declaración Conjunta mediante la cual se establecieron relaciones diplomáticas entre ambos países. El Secretario General de la OEA, Dr. César Gavira también firmó el documento como Testigo de Honor.

Tras la firma de la Declaración Conjunta, la Representante Permanente de Honduras recalcó que su país desea profundizar estrechas relaciones en todo los ámbitos con la República de Croacia. Asimismo, el Embajador Zuzul abogó por una mayor cooperación entre América Central y Europa Central. También recordó que con la firma de esta Declaración Conjunta se cierra una etapa en la historia de Croacia, ya que con ese acto concluye el periodo de establecimiento de relaciones diplomáticas con los países de América Latina.

ESTABLISHMENT OF DIPLOMATIC RELATIONS WITH HONDURAS

Mr. Secretary General, Mr. Chairman of the Permanent Council, Ambassador Nunez, Permanent Representatives, ladies and gentlemen:

Today is a very significant day in the relationship between the Republic of Croatia and the Americas. By signing this Joint Declaration with the Republic of Honduras we are concluding a long process that started in 1991 when Croatia declared its independence and sought the recognition of the international community, including of course the Latin American countries, where a large number of Croatian emigrants live.

Today, that process came to an end. Signing this Joint Declaration, we can proudly say that all the Latin American countries have recognized our independence and established diplomatic relations with the Republic of Croatia.

It is not a coincidence that this process is concluded in the Headquarters of the Organization of American States, since we believe that the OAS is the natural forum of the Americas.

Finally, I would like to congratulate Ambassador Nunez and the Republic of Honduras for this Joint Declaration. In the Republic of Croatia you will find a friendly country, whose Government will work seriously to strengthen not only ties between our two countries but also between our two regions, Central America and Central Europe.
