THE MEDIA


Facts
  There are 1,421 newspapers, magazines and journals published yearly in Croatia
  12 national dailies (Večernji list, Jutarnji list, Vjesnik, Slobodna Dalmacija, Novi list, etc.)
  17 weekly news magazines (Globus, Nacional, Nedjeljna Dalmacija, Feral Tribune, etc.)
  56 minority publications (Italian, Serbian, etc.)
  Croatian Radio and Television (HRT) broadcasts 3 national television programs daily and 4 national radio programs daily
  Hina (Croatian Information and News Agency) currently the largest state owned news agency
  10 private local television stations broadcast throughout the country
  115 public and private radio stations operating throughout the country
  16 minority broadcast available in languages (Italian, Serbian, Hungarian, Czech, etc.)
  more than 100,000 Internet users in Croatia (this is a considerably high number for a population of only 4.7 million people)
  more than 2,000 foreign newspapers, magazines and journals are sold on the Croatian market

Current Legislation
  Freedom of expression shall specifically include freedom of the press and other media outlets for  communication, freedom of speech and public   expression, and free establishment of all institutions of public communication (Article 38, Constitution of the Republic of  Croatia).
  The Croatian Government is currently working on new legislation concerning the full transformation of Croatian Radio and Television (HRT) from a state owned to a public owned broadcasting company.

Freedom of the Media in Croatia
  According to the Helsinki Commission Hearing on Deterioration of Freedom of the Media in OSCE Countries which was held on April 4, 2000, Croatia was not mentioned among the countries in which the freedom of media has been weakened (as referred by Marilyn J. Greene, Executive Director, World Press Freedom Committee).
