George W. Bush

President of the United States of America

Washington, D.C.

Zagreb, September 11, 2001

Dear Mr. President,

Horror-stricken by today’s terrorist attacks in the United States, let me convey to You, on behalf of the citizens of the Republic of Croatia and in my own name, the expression of the strongest condemnation of these cowardly and insane attacks which have caused a large number of innocent victims.

In these difficult moments for your country, our thoughts are with you, with the American people and especially with the families of the victims, to whom we would like to express our most heart-felt and deepest sympathy.

The terrorist attacks against the United States, which can be qualified only as a war challenge to the United States, but also as acts against civilization, confirm the need for the democratic world to unite in the struggle against terrorism whatever its type or provenience.

Please receive, dear Mr. President, the assurances of my particular consideration.

                                                                                     Sincerely Yours,

                                                                                     Stjepan Mesic

Dear Colleague,

In utter disbelief and with the deepest sorrow I keep following the news broadcasts and the wire services, still not truly able to comprehend what is happening around us. As individuals and societies we have yet to come face to face with the great tragedy that has befallen all of us. Distances mean nothing in situations like this; consequences we shall all share. The only way to overcome the consequences is to help each other in moments like this.

I am still at a loss for words which could properly reflect the degree of consternation and indignation over those who have committed, and aided in such an abhorrent act of inhumanity and senseless terrorism aimed at people and symbols.

When an attack is aimed against people going about their daily routine, and against symbols such as the Twin Towers among others, the attack is against civilization.

There is something truly missing this morning from the Skyline – yours as well as ours; the World Skyline. It is time to start asking ourselves how we can replace it. I am convicted that the answer to that question will determine the future of the world we live in.

My country, its people and its Government, have repeatedly in the strongest possible terms condemned these acts of wanton terrorist madness, its direct executors as well as all those who in any manner whatsoever lurk in the background believing that wreaking havoc will turn out to be to anybody’s benefit.

I would like to reiterate my Government’s readiness to help your Government and the American people ease the burden, and ultimately overcome the consequences of this great tragedy. We all have to persevere in our common struggle to start building anew the world in which the cities, ordinary people and symbols of civilizations can never again be exposed to such horrendous acts of organized terrorist lunacy.

We have to work together to have our Skyline back one day.

In these trying moments, Mr. Secretary, my prayers are with your people, with you and your associates.

                                                                                    Sincerely,

                                                                                    Tonino Picula
