Washington DC, Dec 12 2001 – Croatian Ambassador to the U.S., Dr. Ivan Grdesic has provided the opening address at the session of the Balkans Forum organized by the Search for Common Ground Project, the Carnegie Council on Ethics and International Affairs and the Center for Eurasian, Russian and East European Studies at Georgetown University on December 11.

The session focused on the impact of corruption and illegal economies in the Balkans. Ambassador Grdesic presented the Croatian efforts to manage corruption and steps taken to promote the rule of law.

“It is a tremendous task and the Croatian Government has a limited amount of time and overall resources. While the expectations in public regarding taking care of corruption are very high, during the last couple of years, however, the Government was able to change the situation, strengthen the judicial system and empower the public opinion in an overall effort to strengthen the democracy in Croatia,” said Grdesic.

Mark Schneider, Vice President of the International Crisis Group also spoke at the session.

The Forum is a monthly event, a dialogue providing the Washington DC policy community an opportunity to engage in constructive and sustained dialogue on different issues, bringing together the diverse group of academics, activists, policymakers, military officials and non-governmental practitioners.
