CROATIAN PRESIDENT MESIC AWARDED BY AMERICAN BAR ASSOCIATION

Washington DC, January 31, 2002 – Croatian President Stjepan Mesic was awarded the 2002 American Bar Association – Central and East European Law Initiative (CEELI) Award.

"Croatia’s efforts to build a democratic society have not gone unnoticed", said Homer E. Moyer, Chairman of the CEELI Executive Board in his letter to the Croatian president and continued, "your leadership has been instrumental in ensuring that Croatia has worked to adhere to democratic principles, which has not always been an easy task".

A lawyer by profession himself, President Mesic looks forward to receiving the award at the ceremony that will be organized by his American colleagues. The award will be presented to President Mesic at the American Bar Association Annual Luncheon on August 10, 2002 in Washington DC.

The CEELI Award was designed to recognize leaders and their countries for their willingness to take bold steps toward introducing democratic and economic reforms. This honor was given to President Vaclav Havel of the Czech Republic last year.
