Ambassador Zuzul Meets with Representatives of B'nai B'rith

 

Washington, DC (Tuesday, April 14, 1998)—Croatian Ambassador to the United States, Dr. Miomir Zuzul, today received representatives of B'nai B'rith at the Embassy, led by Mr. Tommy P. Baer, International President, and Mr. George Spectre, Associate Director of the Center for Public Policy.

 Ambassador Zuzul relayed to B'nai B'rith a statement by Croatian President Franjo Tudjman that he had  instructed the relevant authorities in Croatia to begin extradition proceedings against Dinko Sakic and that his trial proceed immediately, effectively and transparently."

 Ambassador Zuzul also relayed President Tudjman's message that  the trial be conducted in an open atmosphere," and invited representatives of B'nai B'rith and other interested organizations to assist and participate in the process.

 In addition, Ambassador Zuzul said that he welcomed B'nai B'rith's interest in this subject and emphasized that it was important to ensure that the truth and justice see the light of day regarding Dinko Sakic, Jasenovac and the Second World War.  Furthermore, he explained that the roots of ant-fascism are deeply embedded in Croatia today, citing the historical foundations of the Constitution, President Tudjman's public statements, and the role of the anti-fascist movement in Croatia during the Second World War, including the fact that President Tudjman himself fought the Nazis for four years.

 Mr. Baer recalled that he and Mr. Spectre had a successful meeting with President Tudjman in Croatia in 1995.   Ambassador Zuzul said that much has been done since to broaden and deepen the relationship between Croatia and the world Jewish community.  For example, Ambassador Zuzul referred to the successful cooperation between Croatia and the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, the establishment of diplomatic relations with Israel, and the forthcoming visit by Croatian Foreign Minister Dr. Mate Granic to Israel.  Ambassador Zuzul also said that President Tudjman plans to visit Israel by the end of this year.

 Other participants from the Embassy at today's meeting included Mr. Andrija Jakovcevic, Deputy Chief of Mission, Dr. Branko Baricevic, Minister Counselor, and Mr. Marijan Gubic, Counselor.
