Croatian Minister of Defense Gojko Susak Passed Away

Washington DC, May 4, 1998 -- The Embassy of the Republic of Croatia in Washington D.C., with deep sorrow announces the death of Minister of Defense of the Republic of Croatia, Gojko Susak. He passed away on Sunday night, May 3, 1998, in Zagreb.

Minister Susak performed his responsible and honorable duty during the most difficult time in the creation of Croatian state. In the memory of many Croatians and Americans, Minister Susak will be remembered as a true Croatian patriot, a crucial figure in Croatia's fight for independence.

On the occasion of Minister Susak's death, a book of condolences will be opened in the Embassy of the Republic of Croatia in Washington D.C. (2343 Massachusetts Avenue, NW) on Wednesday and Thursday, May 6 and 7, 1998, between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. During the same time, books of condolences will also be opened in Croatian consulates in the United States.

Minister Gojko Susak will be laid to rest on Thursday, May 7, at noon on the Zagreb Cemetery Mirogoj. That day has been proclaimed a National Day of Mourning in Croatia.

Minister Gojko Susak was born in 1945. Since 1969 he lived in Canada where he was active in the local Croatian community. Following the election in Croatia in 1990, he became a member of the Croatian Government. Between 1990 and 1991, he was Minister of Immigration and Deputy Minister of Defense. In 1991 he was named Minister of Defense. He remained in that position until his death.
