By 2008, Croatia will build 453 km of highways

Zagreb, April 21, 2004 - Croatian media reported that Croatian strategic development projects will not stop at connecting Zagreb and Rijeka, that would be linked with a highway for the first time in June this year, or Zagreb and Split, that would be completely finished by June of 2005.

Republic of Croatia plans to continue building its highway system by connecting Split and its southernmost tip at Dubrovnik. Also, a highway connecting northern Adriatic port of Rijeka with Zuta Lokva, junction at Zagreb – Split highway is almost certain to be built. The two mentioned highways would connect Croatian coast by 2008 and in the end serve as future Adriatic-Ionian highway that, by the European Union plans, will connect Italy and Greece.

The Adriatic-Ionian highway will run through seven countries, mostly through Croatia, and include most of Zagreb – Split highway that is being built in Croatia.

Furthermore, Croatia plans to build two more highways in Slavonia region. First project is to finish highway to Serbia and Montenegro border at Lipovac and the other is to build highway that will connect southern Hungary and northern Bosnia and Herzegovina.

A total of 453 kilometers of highways will be thus built by 2008 in Croatia, an investment of 2.5 billion kuna (400 million $)
