ADDRESS BY
CHARLES J. DOUGHERTY, Ph.D.
DUQUESNE UNIVERSITY PRESIDENT
ON THE OCCASION OF PRESENTING
A PRESIDENTIAL CITATION TO
H.E. DR. IVO SANADER
PRIME MINISTER OF THE REPUBLIC OF CROATIA
Ivo Sanader, you earned a doctorate in comparative literature and romance languages from the University of Innsbruck in Austria. You began a successful career as an editor and publisher, managed your own companies in Austria, and returned to your home city of Split to manage the Croatian National Theater.
In 1991, your homeland declared its independence from the former Yugoslavia. As Croatia fought to regain its sovereignty, you moved from the theater to a new stage, offering yourself in public service. Elected to the National Parliament in 1992, you served in a variety of positions, including minister of science and technology, deputy minister of foreign affairs, chief of staff to the president and secretary general of the defense and national security council.
In 2000, you were elected as the president of the Croatian Democratic Union, and were re-elected to your position two years later, leading your party to victory in the elections of 2003 and becoming prime minister of the Republic.
You set out to reshape both your party and your nation – removing extreme nationalists from party leadership and encouraging accused war criminals to turn themselves in to face justice. You extended your hand in reconciliation to your countrymen and your neighbors – leading by personal example in bringing together Croats and Serbs – Catholics, Orthodox, Muslims, and Jews.
You have focused on raising Croatia’s profile in the world community. You have contributed personnel and support to the international struggle against terrorism and the rebuilding of Afghanistan. You are a tireless advocate for Croatian membership in NATO and the European Union, and your efforts were rewarded by the European Commission, which earlier this year agreed to begin talks toward a goal of EU membership by 2007.
Duquesne University welcomes you to its campus and recognizes your faith and vision. On the behalf of the entire Duquesne community, I proudly present you with this presidential citation to honor your efforts, awarded in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on the twenty-seventh day of September in the year two thousand four.
