CROATIA & USA - 1996 AND BEYOND

Croatia and USA - Scientific and Technological Cooperation

Cooperation in the field of science and technology between Croatia and the United States is an integral element of our bilateral relations. The exchange of ideas, knowledge and experience, as well as people, is of the utmost benefit to scientists and their institutions in both countries. This cooperation is executed either within the framework of official cooperation or on the basis of private individual contacts between the respective individuals and institutions. A significant part of the cooperation relates to financial support from various grants that are established to allow foreign scholars to pursue their research or a particular study or specialization in various fields. The results of the scientific and technological cooperation are often not immediately measurable; those that resulted in obvious technological innovations can be immediately seen; those that related to improved scholarly and practical knowledge can be seen through the improved quality of scientific publications and other less measurable developments.

Croatian and American scholars have been actively cooperating for decades. Since Croatian independence, negotiations began to formalize cooperation, leading to the March 17, 1994 signing in Washington of the Agreement on Scientific and Technological Cooperation. This agreement is the basis for mutual cooperation in the field of science and technology, setting the framework and, as its main feature, establishing the U.S. - Croatia Joint Commission (Board) on Scientific and Technological Cooperation that oversees the implementation of the agreement.

In addition to programs and grants effectuated through the Joint Board, there are bilateral exchange programs, as well as grants awarded by the U.S. Government to qualified Croatian scholars. These are: Fulbright Program (predoctoral and postdoctoral scholarships, media professionals), Hubert Humphrey scholarships, Alexander Hamilton scholarships and John Marshall scholarships. So far, the following scholarships have been awarded:
